Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts with the Help of Astrology

Some people see a public suicide as an opportunity to tell everyone to “reach out when you need help”, “call the hot line”, “know that you are not alone”, etc. This feels helpful, but in therapy we learn to self regulate…or I did anyway. In therapy I learned that when I’m struggling, I’m the one who has to give myself what I need, and I can’t wait for others to help me through my difficult feelings. In fact, I’ve learned that other people are often the ones that trigger me the most. Although I am scared to share this, this blog post is my exploration for helping everyone overcome suicidal thoughts with Astrology, because understanding my personal Astrology, helped me overcome mine.

I understand that it’s overwhelming to know what to do and to know how to help yourself through suicidal thoughts. So, as a regular human being (not trained in psychological healing), I’m telling you that it’s okay if you don’t want to reach out to the helpline, and it’s okay if you do (just dial 988). It’s okay that your mind is this complex place full of fears, doubts, and a labyrinth of complicating feelings that no one could possibly understand except you. I see you.

Healing Suicidal Thoughts with the Planets

For me, when the deep dark depression arises, I look to the stars. In 2020 when I was at my lowest, or second lowest (childhood had some rough patches), I dove deeper into my Astrology practice. In order to overcome my dark, sometimes suicidal thoughts, I found a group of highly sensitive astrology-loving virtual friends to help me heal. While I wasn’t bringing the best version of myself to the Zoom meetings at that time, they accepted me anyway. They saw my Moon, Uranus, Neptune combination in Capricorn in my first house, and they went “Ah cool, I think this is probably why you feel the way you feel.”

Song break. I’m thinking about this Doja Cat song when thinking about my Moon, Uranus, Neptune in Capricorn.

That’s the beauty of Astrology. Everyone’s planetary alignments are unique, and once you understand the meanings behind the planets, you can find your individual strength and healing method.

Healing with the Moon

When it comes to healing suicidal or depressive thoughts, the Moon is the first “planet” I look at in an Astrology chart. It’s possible to find healing qualities in every planet; however, since the Moon rules over our emotions and habits – I want to start there.

Your Moon sign shows you how you can get what you need. If you don’t already know it, go ahead and pull up your birth chart and look at which zodiac sign and house your Moon is placed in. Afterwards, read the paragraphs below for advice on how to overcome your suicidal or depressive thoughts.

Aries Moon or First House Moon

  • Ask for space. Independence is important to you. So, if you want to go on a solo vacation, go on a solo vacation. I know people often think the best way to help a friend in need is to spend quality time with them, but sometimes the best way to help is to give them space to discover who they are and what they really want out of life. Let people know if you need space.
  • Ask for the chance to be yourself – your whole self as you are – brutal honesty included. You can’t ask that people not get offended by your actions because they are human too. But you can release the need to people please, and let people be mad at you. If they love you, they will keep you in their life. Let them be hurt, and don’t beat yourself up for not always saying the right things.

Taurus Moon or Second House Moon

  • Ask for money…just kidding. Ask for support when you express your values. Even if your peers have different values than you do, ask them to at least understand where you are coming from. They don’t have to agree, but a good person should at least understand and respect your differences. If they don’t understand you, maybe it’s time to release them from your life. You don’t have to abandon your values in order to fit in.
  • Ask for physical touch. When your thoughts are wandering to that scary, possibly suicidal place, healing can be transferred through a loving embrace. In other words, a good bro hug goes a long way.

Gemini Moon or Third House Moon

  • Ask for your siblings/family to communicate with you more often. Astrology is layered and complex, so as a Gemini, overcoming your suicidal thoughts is possible with not only the help of your Moon placement, but also with the help of your Mercury placement. Check out these Mercury archives for more information on how to embrace your individual communication style.
  • Ask for a fun night out on the town with friends. Getting out of the house feels hard when you are sad, but I promise you – getting some fresh air and goofing off with the gals will at least get your mind off of things for a while.

Cancer Moon or Fourth House Moon

  • Ask for help from your parents or mentors/elders. If it isn’t safe to open up to your parents, then don’t do it. See if there are other, more open minded elders or mentors that you can speak to about your problems. Older people, and even some younger people with old souls, gain wisdom through life experiences. These people track patterns and know how to get out of life’s greatest ruts. Reach out to them and absorb their knowledge. If sharing your deep suicidal or depressive thoughts still seems scary, then check out these tips for opening up and feeling your feelings with the help of the planet Mercury.
  • Ask for your loved ones to eat nourishing food with you. The occasional taco night is good for the soul.

Leo Moon or Fifth House Moon

  • Ask for a play date. Go to a trampoline park, hit up your local gaming store, or just sit in your friends basement and whip out the PlayStation. According to this Healthline article, play therapy is not just for children. Adults can benefit from a good arts and crafts day too.
  • Ask for help from your romantic partner or your children. Ask them to show you love and kindness today. Sometimes we tease the ones we love. So your partner may poke fun at you because they think you are cute and silly, but it’s important to express when your feelings get hurt.

Virgo Moon or Sixth House Moon

  • Ask for others to be of service to you today. Show them how they can help you overcome your suicidal or depressive thoughts. For example, ask “can you do the dishes today?”, “can we order food, so I don’t have to think about cooking?”, etc.
  • Ask for alone time so you can move your body freely. Imagine those dark thoughts leaving your being as you wildly dance like no one is watching. Make it a habit to move your body for at least five minutes every day.

Libra Moon or Seventh House Moon

  • Ask for a date night with you partner, your girlfriends, your coworkers, or whomever you want. If large groups are overwhelming, ask for one on one time with a close pal. Intimate connection can be hard to come by in our daily lives. Be intentional on this date night.
  • Ask for self care time. Treat yourself to a spa day, a fishing trip, or a shopping trip. Whatever splurgy hobby you’re into – ask people to give you the time to treat yourself. Or ask them to back off when they judge your for ordering more online goodies. The occasional package delivery can be very therapeutic. Hell, you could even create an ASMR unboxing video for your social media followers. They might benefit from you treating yourself as well.

Scorpio Moon or Eighth House Moon

  • Ask for trust. Make sure you are as comfortable as you can be, then share your secrets with a loved one. What’s the worst that could happen? They tell the world and the world cancels you? Join the cancel club; we welcome you with open arms because as humans who have messed up, we know that everyone messes up.
  • Ask for forgiveness. Accepting your flaws is challenging, but once you do this – don’t be afraid to ask for forgiveness. Good friends appreciate vulnerability and apologies.

Sagittarius Moon or Ninth House Moon

  • Ask god for help. Ask your goddesses for help. Ask your higher self for help. Visualize your higher self swooping down and filling you with gold healing light (or whatever color feels right). I sometimes struggle to feel Spirit, but meditation usually helps me reconnect when I’m feeling lost.
  • Ask for adventure. Ask your friends to go on a trip, or ask your partner if you can take a solo trip by yourself. Whatever feels right for you – just do something you’ve never done before.

Capricorn Moon or Tenth House Moon

  • Ask your colleagues for support. Sometimes you spend more time with work people than family, so ask them for their support. Get as deep as you are comfortable going – but remember, they have a job to do – so if they seem closed off, it’s because they don’t feel like work is the right space to open up in. If they are good friends, they will open up outside of work. Just be patient.
  • Ask for some responsibility to be lifted off of your shoulders. Set some boundaries and tell everyone that you are not able to provide for them at this time. Put the responsibility back on them and trust that they can figure it out for the time being.

Aquarius Moon or Eleventh House Moon

  • Ask for less criticism. Tell your peers to try having an open mind for a change. If they continue to criticize, ask them to do it elsewhere. Whether they are criticizing you, or other people – criticism is a negative vibration that you don’t need in your life right now.
  • Ask for a weirdos night out. Go to a weird bar, drink a weird drink, eat some weird food. Gather your weirdest pals and get loose.

Pisces Moon or Twelfth House Moon

  • Ask for an escape. Go wander in the woods, get lost in your favorite video game world, read a spiritual book. Ask your down to earth pals to quit bringing you down to reality for a minute and go get lost.
  • Ask for help from your therapist, or a friend who has a good therapist. Look for a mental health professional who will understand your feelings and won’t bypass them. Even if it takes a couple of tries.

Summary

As you can see, this process for overcoming suicidal thoughts with the help of Astrology, isn’t easy. Depression isn’t one sized fits all. It comes and it goes, and it’s up to us to get out of it as individuals – but it’s also up to us to recognize the sadness in others and support them as best as we can. It’s a tricky duality, huh? Regardless, if you are struggling with dark thoughts, I want you to know that you are not alone and even though it may not feel like it – you are loved. I want you to keep going. You are important.

What are some ways you have overcome suicidal and/or just general depressive thoughts? What’s your Moon sign? I’d love to hear your story.
